The Porvoo Museum Association was founded in 1896 to save the Old Town Hall.
The Old Town Hall had already been scheduled for demolition when the Porvoo authorities
placed it at the disposal of the Museum Association, which had been founded in May 1896.
The building was refurbished and an active campaign of searching for objects laid the
foundations of the collection. The Museum opened its door to the public on 24.1.1897.
In those days there were only about ten city or town museums in Finland.
The Association still owns the museum and is responsible for its collections and
management. Under agreement with the city authorities, it takes care of museum services
in Porvoo, whilst the city maintains the museum financially. The museum also receives
statutory State part-funding.
