EAST
UUSIMAA REGIONAL MUSEUM
Finland has hundreds of small local museums, which are maintained through
voluntary effort and with the aid of State grants. To promote them, the
country is divided into 20 regions, in each of which the Ministry of Education
has designated one professionally-run museum as the Regional Museum.
The Porvoo Museum was declared the East Uusimaa Regional Museum in 1982
and its area of responsibility comprises ten municipalities on or close
to the south coast to the east of Helsinki. It is tasked with promoting
and guiding the work of museums in the region. The advice it gives relates
to collecting, cataloguing, taking care of artefacts and conservation as
well as general museum management.
About a half of the local museums are of the traditional kind with exhibitions
reflecting old vernacular culture. The museums are usually in old buildings
of significant historical and cultural merit. Most local museums are open
only in summer and on Sundays, some also by arrangement.
