Phenomenal Iris

9.6.2023 – 1.4.2024 Holm House and The Old Town Hall

The new exhibition in Porvoo Museum is about a company called Aktiebolag Iris. It revolutionized Finnish design and connected it to the international jugendstil movement. AB Iris was founded in Porvoo in 1897 where it operated until 1902. The central figures in the factory were the artists Louis Sparre and A. W. Finch. Phenomenal Iris tells the story of the factory and exhibits art by Sparre and Finch.

The exhibition will be displayed in Holm House and the Old Town Hall.

The Iris-collection in Porvoo Museum is broad and it has been researched since the 1950s. The collection is unique as a source on Finnish design. The exhibition which opens in June tells the wider story of the significance of the Iris factory in the change of the century. The design of Iris objects was colourful and bold. It combined visual art, craftmanship and quality materials in the spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement.
